Spence is such a good humored little snot. He's got a week of treatments left and he's been such a trooper through all of this. Sometimes I forget that he's only 15, with a brain tumor, and taking it so well.
I really, really like him.
I have been seeing more kids come through the office now that school is out, many of them around his age. I think about him a lot throughout my day, specifically when these kids are in my chair. I can't help but be a little...oh I don't know...bitter? no...maybe slightly resentful (only slightly) towards them. I'm just selfish and wish that they had the stupid tumor (not really. that'd be awful.)...but I can't think of anyone on earth that could deal with all of this fractionally as well as this special little human being has:
As you've (maybe) seen in the videos, he's really doing well. He's lost "a little weight" (making him look gaunt at 6'2" and 14?lbs), is pretty pale, and rocking the crap out of the shaved head. His radiation treatments make him horribly nauseated, lacking in appetite and extremely tired. The ondansetron medication he takes everyday (if he remembers) helps with the nausea, but not the lack of appetite/exhaustion. He eats pretty well (I hope once all of this is over he gets a fatty appetite and gains 30lbs), but he sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeps. Like...all the time. I get home around 5:30 or so from work and then head out again and he usually falls asleep around that time and is asleep until the following morning (he'd be the perfect baby...but I prefer him alert).
I hate walking by the "big green" late late late at night, seeing him laying there all on his lonesome. So, I'll grab my computer or a book and sit with him for a few hours (sometimes just watching him...because I'm a friggen creep).
I was watching a rerun of grey's tonight and this song came on and it made me think of spence:
